Kate Nash - Foundations analysis

The blue and pink toothbrushes are sterotypically gender specific colours, the toothbrush itself suggests there is a couple living together. This shot only lasts a second as it shows the audience what to expect from the music video.    The green telephone is used as a bright, childlike colour to keep the audience intrested, it also gives a vintage feel too the music video as the phone is old fashioned along with the cassete tape.  This compare to the new mordern watches can represent how different their personalities are.  The yellow shoes stand out, and these first few images show the relationship at the beginning when it was at its best.

The separation of the shoes is showing divide in the relationship is growing, with the different personalities becoming an overwhelming factor which will later cause arguments.  The next image displays this perfectly, with a mid-shot showing the couple playing a game.  After this, there is a close up on each of their faces showing unhappy expressions.  This is representing the game being played within the relationship, and how they are being childish, shown by the use of primary colours that are often related to childlike figures.  The next scene is performance, as she is lip-syncing  in narrative.  This is also a longer take showing the link in performance and narrative as the lyrics relate to the images on screen.
After this, it links to the childish behaviour again by referring to a fish as 'their friends'.  The next significant scene is Kate Nash is standing next to a fridge full of beer showing a modern day stereotypical housewife getting beer for her partner, however the narrative and performance aspect link together here showing her boredom in the relationship.  This is displayed clearly by the sarcasm within the lyrics 'yeah intelligent input darlin', why don't you just have another beer then?' .The brightly coloured orchid is shown in beer bottles as she is feminine.  The low mid shot shows the immaturity between the couple as she is kicking over skateboards, an item that has a connotation of a younger person.
In this scene the toy animals are used to represent their friends that are surrounding the relationship this is shown by the lyrics being in sync 'and everyone we're with will be embarrased and I wont give a shit'.  The props used here are childrens toys suggesting their arguements are getting more and more petty.  The next scene is significant because it is a high angle showing how the couple are in bed, and the distance in the relationship is clear.  Kate Nash is holding onto a teddy, which is often seen as a comfort toy for younger children displaying her need for affection.  In the next scene there is an unusual aspect as it is a long take of a white and blue sock, showing how they are not close anymore.

This scene relates to previous ones as it shows childish behaviour as she is eating lemons to prove a point, this also has good timing with the lyrics as they are 'you said I must eat so many lemons, cos I am so bitter.  I said I'd rather be with your friends mate cos they are much fitter' as the image comes up on screen.  This creates visual imagery for the audience making the video more successful as it has a clear flow of narrative.  The colour yellow runs throughout and is dominant within this music video which contradicts the theme as yellow is usually associated with being happy.  Whereas, this music video is based on arguments in a long term relationship.  There is also a change of scene from the kitchen to the stairs which shows a performance aspect of the music video as she is alone lip syncing.  Next, there is a high angle of an arm wrestle with bright colours in the background as the childlike theme continues.
Here, there is a picture of a baby which continues the running theme of childlike behaviour, however the correlation between the image and the lyrics is different.  This is because ‘it gives me thrills to wind you up’ is talking about the relationship whereas in the image the toy is a wind-up toy.  The brightly coloured cake shows the gaps in their relationship as some strawberrys shown as a decorative design on top of the ake are missing.  Also, this next scene shows Kate Nash fighting, this relates to the lyrics 'and everytime we fight I know it's not right, everytime that your upset and I smile I know I should forget but I cant' shows how Kate Nash is fighting back.  Throughout, the images have been in sync to the lyrics making the video more intresting for the audience.

This facial expressions are linked to the negative lyrics.  An example of this is ‘Your face is pasty 'cause you've gone and got so wasted, what a surprise.  Don't want to look at your face 'cause it's makin' me sick.’ This shows the breakdown in communication and relationship, as the video itself has shown all the different stages of the relationship breakdown which is interesting for the viewer.  Kate Nash has expressed her feelings in the video in different ways, such as threw objects such as toys, shoes, watches, socks and food.
This last stage shows the final break up in conclusion, the objects representing the couple such as the toothbrushes are fighting, with the blue and white socks being separated representing the end of relationship.  The negative lyrics also show how Kate Nash has had enough ‘and I’ll leave you there till the morning, and I purposely won’t turn the heating on and dear God I hope I’m not stuck with this one’.  This relates to the lyrics as the last chorus shows she has had enough of the arguments, with a correlation to the images shown on screen as she is taking her suitcase and leaving him.
